On May 7, 1946, just after the devastation of World War II, Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita founded a small company called Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (TTK), which would later translate to Sony. Starting with just 20 employees and an initial capital of 190,000 yen (approximately $500 at the time), their ambition knew no bounds.

Founder Masaru Ibuka had a bold vision: “To establish an ideal factory that emphasizes a spirit of freedom and open-mindedness that, through technology, will contribute to Japanese culture.”

Operating from a small, rundown workshop, in those early years TTK focused on repairing electronic equipment damaged during the war, but they soon embarked on a journey that would forever change the way the world experienced sound and images.

Sony’s early years were marked by constant innovation. In 1950, they launched their first groundbreaking product: the Type G magnetic tape recording device. This device allowed users to record and play back audio in a portable manner, something unimaginable until then. With the vision to expand globally, in 1958 Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (TTK) formally adopted “Sony Corporation” as its corporate name. Easy to pronounce and read in any language, the name Sony, sounding lively, comfortably fit with the spirit of freedom and open-mindedness.

The name Sony was created by combining two words: “sonus” and “sonny.” The word “sonus” in Latin represents words like sound and sonorous. The other word “sonny” means little son. Used in combination, Sony is supposed to represent a very small group of young people who have the energy and passion for unlimited creations and innovative ideas.

As the company grew, Sony began expanding internationally. In 1960, they opened their first subsidiary in the United States, allowing them access to a much broader market.
